First penned in 1996, but written for the year 2013, Scott Stahlecker’s novel offers a synopsis that sounds eerily similar to conditions we see taking place today.
Synopsis: “The year is 2013. Due to the influence of terrorism, religious fundamentalism in America has greatly influenced the political and cultural climate of the western world. Laws have been enacted to reestablish America as a God-fearing nation. Basic civilian rights have been restricted, and freedom of speech and artistic expression is being suppressed.
In this setting, Stace Manning, a photographer with a taste for the erotic, is prevented from exhibiting his work at a conservative religious university, and blames Rick Forstein for the injustice. Although Stace would avenge this injustice, he travels to Frankfurt, Germany, to rekindle a passion for his craft. In Frankfurt, he meets and falls in love with a reporter, Eva Burtman. She’s in the midst of an investigation to prevent a psychological computer virus from being unleashed on the Internet. Through a twist of fate, her investigation leads her to conclude that her lover, Stace, is linked to the creator of the virus, Rick Forstein. In order for Stace to prove his innocence to Eva, he must find and confront Rick, his nemesis from the past.”
